Safety

Monitoring: Sitter present for the entire session. Never look directly into the beam. Keep laser power at or below Class 3R. Observer remains seated or reclined for the duration.

Side effects

  • Standard intense DMT effects including overwhelming visual and emotional content
  • Transient tachycardia and elevated blood pressure
  • Possible visual persistence after the session
  • Anxiety or difficult content, mitigated by set, setting, and sitter

Contraindications

  • History of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder
  • Significant cardiovascular disease or uncontrolled hypertension
  • MAOI use or serotonergic drug interactions
  • Photosensitive epilepsy
  • Pregnancy

Overview

Mechanism: A 650 nm coherent light source is observed during an N,N-DMT experience. Observers report structured, language-like visual forms on and around the beam. Whether these forms reflect an external structure, shared neural architecture, laser speckle elaboration, or expectation remains an open question. This protocol exists to make that question answerable.

Evidence level: Pilot study (Goler 2025) plus community replication reports. Convergence is unproven. Serious prosaic explanations (speckle elaboration, cortical form constants, priming) are documented on the Open Theories board and must be beaten by any positive claim.

Preparation

Screening

  • Standard DMT safety screening: personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder is a contraindication
  • Cardiovascular screening: DMT raises heart rate and blood pressure
  • Medication review: MAOIs and some psychiatric medications interact dangerously
  • No photosensitive epilepsy or photosensitive conditions
  • A sober sitter present for the session
  • Documentation tools ready: voice recorder, paper and pen, camera for the surface

Set setting: Dark or dim room. A red 650 nm laser of low power (Class 3R, under 5 mW, or lower) aimed at a matte, neutral surface such as a wall or ceiling. Never aim at faces, eyes, windows, or reflective surfaces. Observer seated or reclined at a comfortable distance. Recording equipment tested before the session.

Session execution

Timeline

  • Before anything: photograph the surface and record a 2 minute SOBER baseline observation of the beam. Note everything you see sober, including speckle texture
  • Session begins: observe the beam and surface without forcing interpretation
  • If able, vary conditions during the experience: look away and back, have the sitter briefly cover the laser, move the beam to a second surface
  • Immediately after: voice log everything before speaking to anyone
  • Within 5 minutes: draw any forms seen, without reference images
  • Capture metadata: surface type, wavelength, dose route, approximate duration, whether forms recurred, emotional tone

Sitter role: The sitter never touches the observer without prior consent, keeps the space quiet, manages the laser safely, and notes timestamps of any spoken observations.

Controls and rigor

Why: The protocol is only worth running if a null result is possible. These controls are what make the data usable.

Practices

  • Sober baseline first, every session, same surface
  • Naive first session: do not browse the registry or others' symbol reports before your first documented session. Priming is the strongest skeptical explanation and the easiest to control
  • Laser off intervals: have the sitter switch the laser off and on at unannounced moments and note whether forms persist
  • Surface swaps: repeat observation on a second, different surface
  • Draw first, compare later: never look at the registry before your drawing is done
  • Report nulls: if you saw nothing structured, submit that too. Null reports are tracked and they matter as much as positives
