Apple Vision Pro Passthrough Protocol

Compound: N,N-DMT

Status: research

What was actually claimed about the headset, what was not, and the design that would settle it.

Safety

Monitoring: A head-mounted display is an obstruction. The observer cannot see the room, cannot judge distance and may not be able to remove the device without help. The sitter stays within reach for the entire session, keeps the floor clear, and removes the headset at the first sign of distress without waiting to be asked. Consider running the displayed image arm on a flat screen instead, which loses nothing about the claim being tested and removes this hazard entirely.

Side effects

  • Disorientation and nausea from a head-mounted display
  • Restricted vision and restricted movement
  • For substance arms, the effects listed on the 650 nm laser protocol page

Abort criteria

  • Any distress, disorientation or nausea
  • Observer attempts to stand while wearing the device
  • Any difficulty removing the headset

Contraindications

  • Head-mounted displays worn during an N,N-DMT experience, unless a sober sitter is present and able to remove the device
  • Photosensitive epilepsy or photosensitive conditions
  • For any arm involving N,N-DMT, every contraindication listed on the 650 nm laser protocol page applies without modification

Overview

Mechanism: Display and capture are different claims with different tests. If the forms appear only to a person under N,N-DMT while viewing an image, the image file itself is unchanged and the effect lives in perception, which is testable by showing the same file to sober viewers and to other observers. If a camera or headset sensor records structure that is present in the file, that is a claim about pixels and it is settled by publishing the file. Any camera-mediated arm of this protocol is worth running mainly because it can distinguish these two, and because a file can be examined by anyone, forever, without a substance.

Indications

  • Record of a widely repeated claim
  • Display versus capture discrimination
  • Test design for a camera-mediated arm

Evidence level: The record as of 21 August 2026, stated precisely because the popular version and the source version differ. The Shawn Ryan Show published episode 320 on 9 July 2026 under a title saying the Apple Vision Pro may have captured something that cannot be explained. In the episode transcript the claim made is narrower: that a still image, recorded beforehand and then viewed inside the headset by a person under N,N-DMT, shows the forms, and that they appear static within that image. That is a claim about what a person perceives while looking at a displayed photograph. It is not a claim that the headset's cameras recorded anything, and no recorded file, no frame, no dataset and no analysis has been published. A second claim from the same episode describes a tool in development that would register an event and retain roughly five seconds of context either side of it. No release, no specification and no independent test of that tool exists in the public record. Both items are podcast assertions. Neither has been replicated, and neither is evidence for or against the underlying phenomenon. This page exists so that the distinction between display and capture survives repetition.

Contraindications

  • Head-mounted displays during an N,N-DMT experience add a physical hazard, restrict vision and cannot be removed quickly by a disoriented observer
  • Photosensitive epilepsy or photosensitive conditions
  • This page documents claims and a study design, and is not an instruction to obtain or use a controlled substance

Integration

Prompts

  • Describe what you see in this image, without naming anything you have seen elsewhere
  • Is what you see in the image itself, or on top of it?
  • Does it change when the image is paused, moved, or replaced with a different file?
  • Would you still describe it the same way if you saw it sober?
  • Which file is this, and were you told what to expect?
  • If nothing structured appeared, say so plainly

Homework

  • Archive the image file unmodified with its hash and its capture metadata before the session
  • Record the headset model, software version and display settings

Framework: Each viewing session produces one registry submission that names the file hash, the device, whether the arm was sober, and whether the claim under test was display or capture. The file itself is archived alongside. A record that does not name which of the two claims it addresses cannot be used, so the metadata is not optional here.

Follow up structure

  • Submit the sober viewing record first, with the file hash
  • Submit the naive viewer records
  • Submit the substance arm record, tagged to the same file hash
  • Submit a null report through the same route if nothing structured appeared

Preparation

Screening

  • Sober viewing of the identical file first, by the same observer, recorded before any other arm
  • Sober viewing of the identical file by at least two other people who have not seen the registry
  • Standard safety screening as set out on the 650 nm laser protocol page applies to any arm involving a substance
  • No photosensitive epilepsy or photosensitive condition
  • A sober sitter who can remove the headset and who controls the session
  • The image file is hashed and archived before the session, so the version viewed can be proven identical to the version published

Set setting: If a headset is used at all, it is fitted, adjusted and tested before any substance is involved, and a sober sitter is able to remove it. The observer is seated or reclined with no obstacles. A displayed image arm requires only the image file, the headset and a sober viewing session first. Every image used is archived unmodified with its capture metadata so that anyone can inspect the same file later.

Consent template: A written protocol document for this arm is published as a free PDF and is linked from the downloads section of the site, in English, Spanish and German. The claim being tested is stated on the first page, in the narrow form, so that an observer is not primed by the headline version.

Legal status: Arms of this protocol involving N,N-DMT concern a substance that is Schedule I in the United States and controlled in most countries. Nothing here is an instruction to obtain or use a controlled substance, and nothing here is medical advice. The sober viewing arms involve no substance.

Controls and rigor

Why: This is the claim most likely to be repeated in a stronger form than its source supports. The controls below are what would turn it from an assertion into a result, and they cost nothing but discipline.

Practices

  • Publish the file. If structure is present in the pixels, a published file settles it permanently and needs no observer at all. If no file is published, the claim is about perception and should be described that way
  • Sober control on the identical file, same observer, same headset, recorded first
  • Naive control on the identical file, viewers who have not seen the registry, sober
  • Decoy files. Include images from the same apparatus that the observer is not told apart from the target file, and score whether the report distinguishes them
  • Separate the two claims in the report. State whether the observation is about the displayed image or about the recording device, and never let one stand in for the other
  • Report null results. An observer who views the file under a substance and sees nothing structured has produced the most informative version of this test so far
