The Ermentrout and Cowan model is extended to account for contoured patterns as well as plain geometry. This remains the reference physical explanation for tunnels, spirals, lattices and honeycombs. It does not attempt to explain reports of discrete symbol-like or alphabetic forms, which is exactly the gap this registry is pointed at.
