Ermentrout and Cowan derive Klüver's form constants from the architecture of primary visual cortex. Stripes and hexagons of cortical activity map, through the retino-cortical transform, onto the tunnels and spirals people describe. This remains the strongest standing argument that geometric hallucination is generated inside the visual system rather than received from outside it.
